Geek About

Just what the internet needed…yet another blog! Even more original…it’s a blog about being a geek! Yes, that’s right…it’s chic to be geek nowadays. But to be fair, we were geek before geek was cool!

We’re often asked what does “geek” mean?

If you consult the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it will tell you this:

  1. a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake
  2. a person often of an intellectual bent who is disliked
  3. an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity <computer geek>

The Urban Dictionary has this to say:

  1. Someone with a HUGE amount of knowledge in one, or multiple subjects. Usually associated with computers. Seen as weak and un-athletic, but doesn’t have to be.
  2. It doesn’t seem to refer to “computer programmers” as much as it once did when computers weren’t so damn cool handy. Geeks are pretty much people who have a real understanding for a certain topic; for example films, music, comics, books, cars, etc.. It’s usualy that they are totally obsessed about the topic, or it’s just something they think upon a lot.

Our intention on GSB is to bring you a little spot on the web where geeks of all ages, races, genders, religions, orientations, mythical origin, alternated Earths, and timelines can come together, enjoy some news, reviews, articles, interviews and more. We’re hear to talk everything Geek: comics, tv, movies, books, games, animation and oh, so much more! We’re multi-genre, cross platform, ac/dc media geeks.

So…who is GeekSpeak? There are two main contributors to GeekSpeakBlog.com. Would you like to meet them? Well, then…here ya go!

GeekSpeaker

Jeff Janelle aka GeekSpeaker

Jeff Janelle aka GeekSpeaker

Rocketed to Earth from the planet Geekton, young Geek-Spel watched as his parents were killed while he was simultaneously bitten by a radioactive fly only to learn that he gained no superpowers. So, what was a boy to do? He turned to the world of capes and cowls, losing himself in comics at an age so young, he couldn’t even remember his first comic. Soon, he realized that this was his power…the power of Geekhood. As he grew older, those powers manifested themselves with his uncanny ability to assimilate all things Star Trek, devour hours on hours of geekmade television like Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica (both series!) and, yes…his personal favorite…Xena, Warrior Princess, all while maintaining a vast collection of OUT OF THE BOX action figures (he can still be seen occasionally playing Civil Crisis of the Invasion of the Infite Earths in Crisisin his backyard. Even at 38 he still looks damn cute with his little towel cape!)Today, GeekSpeaker stands tall and proud…well, actually, he sits short…and kind of round…in an office all day…but he’s surrounded by toys. LOTS OF TOYS! He shares his power of geekiness for all as he fights for truth, justice and the geekdom way!

GeekGyrl

Justine Greene aka GeekGyrl

Justine Greene’s first word was “Batman”; so her mother immediately knew she’d never be like other children, while her father was reported to laugh gleefully, while rubbing his hands together, ala all the classic, old school vilains. To counter the (mostly) harmless influences of her father, Justine’s Mom also introduced her to the worlds of  classical music (can we say: The Lawrence Welk Show? I knew we could….) and Broadway musicals. This odd juxtaposition of interests set her on a collision course with all things weird, wacky, musical and unusual.

Justine has been an avid reader for most of her life (after all, the first couple years of life were dedicated to eating, sleeping, watching Batman, The Twilight Zone and Star Trek; playtime and more napping.) While she will read almost anything you put under her nose, her heart belonged to the worlds of the paranormal and science fiction writers. Justine has also been known to put phalanges to keyboard, herself, to spin a tale or two of her own. Justine’s early book crushes were with authors such as Andre Norton; Theodore Sturgeon; Ray Bradbury; Piers Anthony; Carolyn Keene; Anne McCaffrey; Tanith Lee, Harlan Ellison and Mercedes Lackey. In later years, she also developed lifelong literary affairs with the works of authors like Neil Gaiman; Charles DeLint; Sherrilyn Kenyon; Laurell K. Hamilton;  Terri Garey; Jim Butcher; Simon R. Green; Mike Carey; Richard Kadrey; Kylie Chan and too many others to name. As a well rounded media geek gyrl, Justine has also been known to lose herself in the worlds of comic book heroes and villains (even managing a comic book store for a few years in a prior incarnation); or wandering Dream’s realm in Gaiman’s Sandman. When seeking filmed fun, a good bet would be on anything quirky, dark, fantastical, or comically romantic. Among Justine’s fave filmed offerings would be Princess Bride; The Rocky Horror Picture Show; the original (real) Star Wars trilogy (Han shot first!); the even numbered Treks; The Devil Wears Prada; Practical Magic and anything involving Wendy and Brian Froud’s designs, such as Labyrinth. And not to forget the telly, Justine used to threaten callers with immolation if they called during Buffy the Vampire Slayer and more recently, has made similar threats, when watching Fringe; The Big Bang Theory; The Mentalist; The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural.

When someone is looking for interesting, intriguing or just plain weird bits of tid and whimsy, Justine is always happy to be the go-to geek gyrl. You can email Justine at GeekGyrlll@gmail.com.
