As reported last month, Futurama is returning to television on Comedy Central. But the shouts of “Hooray” from the fans could now be turning into “Boo”.
Variety is reporting that talks between 20th Century Fox and the original voice cast have broken down. It seems that Futurama maybe returning with an all-new voice cast.
When it was announced that Futurama would be returning, the studio announced that Billy West, Katey Sagal and John DiMaggio had all signed on to return. However, that wasn’t exactly the truth. While the original cast had expressed their interest in returning, the budget for the show has been so drastically slashed…which meanth the salary offers were much less than what was being asked. Now, casting calls have gone out to find new voice actors for these familiar roles. While it’s always possible that a deal would be reached with the stars, the studio is actively auditioning replacements.
The smaller budget is a result of the show returning on Comedy Central. Shows on cable networks generally tend to have a smaller budget as a result of the smaller audiences and less ability for revenue from ad sales. It’s not just the voice talent that is working on a tighter budget; according to Variety, producers are running with a smaller writing staff and a quicker turn-around time for episodes.
