Justice League International and Birds of Prey Returning to DC
Wow, DC Comics has just been on a role lately with news for their upcoming stuff. Hot on the heels of the announcements regarding the Brightest Day, DC’s official blog The Source has announced that two fan-favorite series are making a comeback to the DCU.
First up, Kieth Giffen returns to the world of Justice League International, and this time, he’s bringing company in the form of on Judd Winick. Justice League: Generation Lost, which features several of the characters from Giffen’s run on Justice League back in the 1980s and 90s, will be a 26-issue bi-weekly series, along the lines of Brightest Day. The series will feature the familiar rooster of Captain Atom, Booster Gold, Blue Beetle, Fire, Ice and Rocket Red. No word on whether or not Guy Gardner makes an appearance. As for why Giffen’s partner-in-crime on the original JLI, J.M. DeMatteis, isn’t working on the book with, Giffen announced the he and DeMatteis, along with artist Christ Batista will be taking over as the creative team on Booster Gold. For more about this great (at least for me!) announcement, check out Newsarama.com for an interview with both Giffen and Winick.
And today DC made it known that Birds of Prey was coming back. As if that fact alone wasn’t enough to make me happy, definitive BoP writer (and personal fave!) Gail Simone would be returning to the book as well.
BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE!
Simone’s original artist for the series, fan-fave Ed Benes is also returning! Canceled back in the Spring of 2009 during the whole Batman: Reborn shuffle, the book will be returning with the familiar stable of characters, including Barbara Gordon (aka Oracle), Huntress, and Lady Blackhawk, as well as featuring the long awaited return of Black Canary to the team. Two other members will join the team, but as you can see in the blacked out cover image, their identities are being kept secret. Relaunching with a new number 1 issue, Birds of Prey will be on shelves sometime in the Spring of 2010.
I don’t know about anyone else, but just between these two announcements, I’m already in geek Heaven. I loved the JLI under Giffen’s run and he and Winick will make a fearsome team with this book. And I was so upset when they canceled Birds of Prey and now have something too look forward to again. With all the announcements that DC has made this week, I’m thinking 2010 is shaping up to be a damn fine year for DC and comic fans everywhere!

I can’t help it…I see the stuff about the return of JLI….and I immediately go back to the early days of the book, in the early ’90′s…when Guy Gardner mouthed off to Batman one time too many…and Batman popped him one…and Booster Gold comes in to see Guy go down, but not the punch…and he’s saying, “One punch! And I missed it!”
That humor, the camaraderie of the original JLI…I hope they can retain some of that with this new incarnation.
Geez, everytime I see blogs this good I just want mine to be there already!
Great work.
This blog is excellent. Keep up the good work, inspires me to keep building mine!
