Lionsgate Picked as Distributor for Kick-Ass
The movie based on Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass comic has found a distributor. Lionsgate will see that the film gets a wide release sometime in 2010.
Kick-Ass follows the tale of a teenaged comic book fan who decides that he should become a superhero, even though he has no powers or training. Known for it’s ultra-violent content, Kick-Ass has become pretty popular with the fans and, with funding from sources including Brad Pitt’s Plan B, the series was quickly turned into a movie. The cast includes Nicolas Cage, Aaron Johnson and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

Clips of the film were previewed at Comic-Con and, if you’re lucky, you might find them on the web. Personally, I have no plans to see this movie. While I enjoyed the premise of the first few issues, the completely over-the-top violence and language left a particularly bad taste in my mouth. I’m never a big fan of violence-for-violence sake, and it seemed that the only reason to make this book so violent was to get a reaction. For me, the reaction was, “Thanks, but no thanks.”
But there’s no denying how popular this book is, and I’m sure the movie is going to capture that popularity and vault it even higher. The filmmakers seem to have captured the look and feel of the book, which means they’ll probably capture the violence. Great for some, but for me, I prefer my heroes to have a bit more morality to them. I know, I know…I’m just old fashioned.
Kick-Ass will be released sometime in 2010. The comics are still being published by Marvel Comic’s Icon line.
