Diamond Comics have released their shipping lists for books arriving this Wednesday and it looks like it’s another light week, which makes me happy…I’ve got to save up before leaving for Comic-Con!

Here are a few highlights for this week:

Blackest Night #1: This is it! Darkness is spreading across the DC Universe as the dead are rising again to become members of the newest Corp: The Black Lanterns. Harking back to a throwaway line in an Alan Moore written Tales of the Green Lantern Corps, Geoff Johns has taken the prophecy of the Blackest Night and turned it into a full on Event (with a capital “E”) in the DCU. The War of Light is beginning just as the Blackest Night sweeps across the DCU, and Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps are caught in the middle. Who will emerge victorious? What will be the new status quo? And what will happen to all the Black Lanterns when all is said and done? I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to find out!

Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps #1 (of 3): The first of many Blackest Night mini-series, Tales of the Corps gives us the “inside scoope” on the various Corps invloved in The War of Light. In this issue, we’ll see Saint Walker’s “pilgramage of hope” to become a Blue Lantern; Star Sapphire Carol Ferris’ scarifice for love; the origins of everyone’s favorite Green Lantern Kilowog; the source of rage for Red Lantern Vice; Orange Lantern Blume’s bizarre creation; and the long anticipated first glimpse of the mysterious Indigo Tribe. I’m not crazy about multiple tie-ins that require even more money shelled out of my wallet each week, but since Johns and Tomasi are writting this one, it’s bound to be good!

JSA vs Kobra: Engines of Faith #2 (of 6): I wasn’t expecting to like the first issue of this mini, but I have to tell you, the writting was spot on and the art was fantastic. And I love that they are making Kobra a huge threat in the DCU again. I know they’ve been around for a while, but over the years, they’ve been diluted and just not as scary a threat as the should be. This mini-series is set to change all that. With what Eric Trautmann is doing with this story, it looks like Kobra could arise to be the biggest terrorist threat to the DCU…well…ever. Think of Al Qaeda on crack times 100 with the addition of the ability to add meta-human powers. Freaking scary. And at the center of it all, the premier super-hero team of the Justice Society of America. I have a feeling this one’s going to change Kobra forever, and I for one can’t wait to see how.

Dark Avengers #7: Utopia X continues! I really didn’t want to like this crossover. I think Dark Reign is being too overplayed; it wouldn’t be so bad in just the regular books, but all the mini-series? And Norman Osborne must secretly be Multiplex, since he’s EVERYWHERE all at once. But so far, this crossover has been great. I credit that to Matt Fraction’s superb writing. I liken him to being Marvel’s answer to Geoff Johns; the man can write any character and do them justice. I hope the momentum continues in this issue’s Dark Avengers. It’s a title I already gave up on a while ago, but for the crossover, I’ll give them another try.

Blackest Night is finally here! It’s probably the most anticpated and talked about mini-series in quite a while and is sure to be a crowd pleaser. I really don’t remember going into my local comic shop and finding one book that everyone agrees is on their must pull list. Even some die-hard Marvelites are taking a plunge into the “darkseid” (sorry…couldn’t resist!).
