From Gold Key to Marvel, then to DC, then back to Marvel…and on and on, Star Trek and comics have always enjoyed an on-again/off-again love affair. But in 1982 that love affair was in an ‘off-again’ period and as a result, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was the only TOS movie that never received a comic book adaptation.

That is…until now.

Hitting comic book shops this week is the first issue of the long awaited Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, published by IDW. Twenty-seven years in the making, Trek fans the world over can finally add that missing piece to their Trek comic collection.

Now comes the real question to be asked: does it measure up? After all, this is The Wrath of Khan…considered by most to be the definitive Star Trek movie (Say what you want about Abrams ‘Trek’…Nicholas Meyer did it first!), can IDW pull it off? Well, for most of us, we’ll have to wait for ‘New Comic Wednesday’ to answer that question. But for those who can’t wait, TrekMovie.com has posted an early review of the first issue

According to reviewer Mark Martinez, it seems to be a winner, at least with issue #1.

“Andy Schmidt put his life on the line, taking on the job of trimming the story to fit into three issues. I’m happy to say that we can put the pitchforks and torches back in the garage. They won’t be needed for this issue.”

Personally, I can’t wait to read this, just based on the preview art alone. It doesn’t hurt that IDW has been doing a bang up job with their new line of Star Trek books. I’m just happy to be that Star Trek and comics are ‘on-again’!
