Some Geek Loving From The Golden Globes

The 67th Annual Golden Globe Nominations gave some loving to geeky movies and televisionThe Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning and, as usual, there wasn’t a whole lot for of cheering for fans of geek movies and television.

Awarded by The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Golden Globes are often considered a benchmark for the famed Academy Awards (whose nominations will be announced on February 2, 2010). And just like the Academy, the Globes tends to favor more “mainstream” entertainment. This year, proved to be no exception (though, in fairness, there were a few bright spots for those of us in the geekdom).

On the motion picture side of the noms, James Cameron’s Avatar (which hasn’t even opened yet) was nominated for Best Feature – Drama, while geek-fave Robert Downey Jr. was nominated as Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for his role in Sherlock Holmes (another film that hasn’t been released yet!). Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire was nominated for Best Actor in a Drama for his role Brothers. District 9 was nominated in the Best Screenplay category, while famed composer James Horner may walk away with the statue for Best Original Score for his muscial work on Avatar. What, no Star Trek? Not even the soundtrack? Nothing? C’mon!

Differing from the Academy Awards, which focuses solely on the motion picture industry, the Golden Globes also recognize the television-side of entertainment as well. This is the area where we can usually find a little more geek-loving and it’s no exception this year.

The Globes did manage to squeeze out some respect for a little show we know and love, True Blood. Not only was the show nominated in the Best Television Series-Drama category, Anna Paquin was nominated as Best Actress in a Drama for her portrayal of Sookie Stackhouse, as well as being a nominee as Best Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television (man…couldn’t they shorten that somehow?!) for her role in The Corageous Heart of Irena Sendler.

My personal favorite new show of the season, Glee definitely got some loving with the most nominations of any TV series! Not only was it nominated as Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, but stars Matthew Morrison and Lea Michele were nominated as Best Actor and Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy, while funny lady Jane Lynch was given the nod for Supporting Actress for the series. And Doctor Horrible himself, Neil Patrick Harris was nominated as Best Supporting Actor for How I Met Your Mother. Alas, the gang from The Big Bang Theory seemed to be shut out completely. Maybe they like geeks more than nerds?
