What The Geek Gyrl is squeeing over right now

A Squee is a personal thing; we each have our own squee-worthy moments and memories and activities and “thingamabobs”. Right now, I’m squeeing over a few movies, a couple TV shows and a video game (no partridges in pear trees, though, please.)

I’m very excited about one of the Labor Day Weekend releases: Gamer. The flick is written and directed by Brian Taylor and Mark Neveldine, and stars Gerard Butler (300, P.S. I Love You) and Michael C. Hall (Dexter), with an exciting supporting cast. They’re taking the concept of interactive, immersion gaming to a whole new, deadly level. Yes, this will be a movie gamer geeks and action junkies can all enjoy together; imagine the date nights for this one. To check it yourself, take a look at the trailer.

I can not tell you how amazingly excited I am to see 9, however. Words literally escape me. Tim Burton produces this one, but Shane Acker and Focus Films are at the helm for this animated movie. The voice talents, including Elijah Wood, Martin Landau and Christopher Plummer, are impressive. The reviews coming out thus far are mixed, but I am reserving judgement. In the trailer, we are told they awakened something terrible; I am hoping that it is not the script. Not terribly surprising, the film comes out on 9/9/09.

Surrogates is a toss up for me; as a good geek gyrl, I of course love my scifi flicks. Add in some good action, a few plot twists and Bruce Willis, how could we go wrong? However, I can’t help but feel as if it’s a bit of Matrix meets Die Hard, with a little sex doll fun thrown in for titillation. That being said, I’ll probably still que up the end of September (9/25/09) to see what all the buzz is about. On the other end of the spectrum, that same weekend we get to go back to school with a group of talented musicians and dancers. Yes, I am talking about Fame, my friends. If you don’t think this belongs in our blog, think again. How many geeky grown ups were band geeks, chorus flunkies and spent their summers in dance or band camps? Yeah, this flick belongs on the Geek Wall of Fame (pun intended.)

My fellow geek, the Geekspeaker, has already told you about two of the other flicks I’m very excited about, so all I’ll do is give you the handy links to Avatar (12/18/09) and Legion (1/22/10).  Well, and say that where Avatar hints at a seductive twining of grace and savagery, Legion may give us a new twist on a very old tale. And hey, guys with wings.

Moving to the smaller screen and across more than a few miles from my cozy geek shack in Florida, I look towards the next Doctor Who Special, The Waters of Mars. Fans of the Doctor have known for a while, now, that David Tennant tips his hat, and makes his final curtain call this season. That final countdown begins with the first previews of WoM. More recently, a longer promo for WoM debuted on BBC One. Rumors say this may air across the pond in November and heralds the return of The Master (four knocks, anyone?) Once done, we’ll have just a couple more precious hours with David as out Doctor, before Matt Smith assumes the role.

Closer to home, the Fall TV Season looms on the horizon. I am keenly interested in the return of Supernatural on 9/10/09 and Smallville on 9/25/09. The WB has not released a real trailer for Smallville, yet, but you can get your fill of the ComicCon fun on YouTube if you don’t mind the hand cam method. Both shows had highs and lows, last season. On the whole, I think Supernatural had the stronger season finale so it’s edging out the Boy in Red and Blue just a bit for me. Vying for my telly attention on 9/25 will be Dollhouse. Of all the returning shows, it’s safe to say this is the one I am most excited about. Of course (yes, it is a simple assumption here at Geek Speak) we’re all chomping at the bit for Caprica, but we’ll have to wait till 1/22/10 to see the new weekly debut.  On the really small screen (for me, at least) I am also enormously excited to see season 3 of The Guild on 9/1/09 (or 8/25 on XBox). This is an online series by gamers, about gamers, for everyone. If you haven’t seen the Guild in action, check them out before the new season starts and don’t miss their music , Do You Wanna Date My Avatar. Felicia Day and company are truly talented and twisted. Always a good combo.  At this point, I’ll stop talking telly, as we’ll be featuring a Fall Preview here on Geek Speak very shortly.

Lastly, but by no means, least, I am gaga over the news from BlizzCon this weekend about World of Warcraft: Cataclysm and all the wickedly kewl changes coming to Azeroth and gameplay. In good geek gyrl fashion, I’ve been blogging, tweeting and talking about this all weekend. To see what’s in store for us, check out the details HERE.

As you can see, I’ll have plenty of things to look forward to this fall to put a squee in my heart and a smile on my face. What will have you squeeing this Fall?
