Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief is coming to theatres February 2010The trailer for the new movie Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief have been released and it looks damn good!

Based on the popular book line, the story follows a young teen (aptly named Percy Jackson, if you hadn’t guessed) who discovers that he is the son of a Greek God, and the adventures he shares with his friends. (Think Harry Potter…except instead of magic, it’s all Greek myth.)

Check out the trailer:

The movie has an all-star cast, including Uma Thruman, Kevin McKidd, Pierce Brosnan, Melina Kanakaredes, Erica Serra and more, and currently scheduled to be released February 12, 2010.

If you loved the Harry Potter books, you’ll love the Percy Jackson series. I know I am. If the trailer is any indication, the movie is gonna rock!

The complete Percy Jackson & The Olympians series can be purchased at your local books store or you can order it online through Amazon.com:

I need to read those books. I think it’s a triumph just to have decent “speculative fiction” available for readers of all ages. Man, I would have gone bananas over Harry Potter, Philip Pullman’s Her Dark Materials trilogy, Artemis Fowl, Neil Gaiman’s stuff etc. etc. Even the great Michael Chabon wrote a fantastic young adult fantasy novel (“Summerland”). Hopefully the movies will serve as a draw for more young readers! And, by the way, am I the only person in the world who liked “The Golden Compass” and is sad that the rest of the trilogy will likely never see the screen?

Oh, Roger, you definitely should read this series. Much like the Harry Potter books, they are all-ages friendly.

And you’re not the only person who liked “The Golden Compass”. I loved the movie. But, in fairness, I never did read the books, though, after seeing the movie, they are on my must read list!
