Top 5 Reasons: To Squee Early over Burton’s Alice in Wonderland

Goth Geeks all over know about Tim Burton’s new interpretation of Alice in Wonderland, hitting theatres March 5, 2010. (If you don’t, shame on you: 5 point demerit for you!) To help wet your appetite, and tune up the squees, here’s our Top Five List of Squee-worthy goodness to savor NOW, as we begin our countdown (come on, you know you’ve already bookmarked your fave fan site, for that nifty counter.)
5. Tim Burton has put his own spin on the story, creating something of a sequel to the original. Alice is now 17 years old and finds herself following a white rabbit once again. This means we have plot twists and Burtonesque oddness to anticipate and argue over for eight months. Even Burton has said, “it’s kind of new territory for me.”
4. Two words: JOHNNY and DEPP
3. Relatively unknown Australian actress Mia Wasikowska portrays the teenage Alice. American audiences may know her from In Treatment. Now we have someone to stir real conjecture, as we have no prior fantastical movie appearances to prepare us for her performance.
2. True Drama Queens: Helena Bonham Carter (most recently seen in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Price) will be ordering heads off to fill her moat, while Anne Hathaway, no virgin to portraying unconventional royalty, will be our White Queen. Both actresses bring their own unique style to this cast that also includes Alan Rickman (Caterpillar); Michael Sheen (White Rabbit); and Stephen Fry(Cheshire Cat).

1. It’s Disney. Yes, I know…some of you are sticking your tongues out at me, but hear me out…Disney is the creative force that brought us the original trippy animated interpretation in 1951. They have an amazing array of creative minds behind their technical wizardy, and if any studio can pull off the combination of Tim Burton + live action + stop motion + CGI + 3D, it’s those Imagineers. They didn’t do so bad with Nightmare Before Christmas, did they?

I imagine he may have more to report to us about Alice’s new Burtonized Adventures after Comicon.

At last weeks ComicCon in San Diego, I was able to watch some sneak peaks of this film, in 3D… It looks fantastic. Johnny Depp and Tim Burton both spoke excitedly about the project, and I left really looking forward to this particular film
(…the other big surprise was the 3D version of Christmas Carole coming in November — don’t judge this one until you’ve seen a bit of it for yourself, it was dark, funny, and really well done…)
